Purpose and Rationale

Taking a look at our daily lives, we realise that it encompasses a lot of things that people have made. These things (medium, media, technology) are mostly taken for granted and usually go unnoticed. And when technology does hit the news, we often critique its effect it has on society. However, what is more important perhaps is for us to take a step back to look at the technology themselves as they are the mediums themselves that changes the scale or pace or pattern in our human affairs and how we express ourselves.

Just like how paper and pen translated our thoughts into words and the television translating images and sound into moving images.

And with emerging technologies, we see ourselves and our lives being translated into more forms of information and data. This means that we can translate more of us into other forms of expressions that are far beyond what we are able to. What can these new technologies and data afford us to express?

1. Introduction

Methodology

Finding news ways to express ourselves through media, the following cases studies are various ways in which data has been used and translated as a material into various forms of outputs of expressions.

Taking a closer analysis of each of the case studies, we take a look at how various data has enabled us newer means of expressions and activities. We look into 3 different areas where data was used and translated.

Looking into Daily Designs that are integrated into our lives

These cases studies were selected based on their purpose and function while interacting with data and also based on the variety of output intended. Exploring the possibilities on how data can be used as a material for alternate forms of expressions.
